Creativity is a Transferable Skill

I've always felt like creativity was a transferable skill. Many skills are like that (athleticism, brain power, etc.). What I've learned over the past 5 years in the creative industry is that my own need for creative outlets has changed over time--mainly out of curiosity and a desire to learn.

When I started out as a calligrapher, I wondered what it would be like to make invitations. I met with other stationers, leaned on my community, and spent a lot of time on education and reading. As I sent my files off to the printer, I wondered what it would be like to letterpress my own suites. I signed up for a local letterpress course and eventually purchased my own letterpress. As I pushed letterpress plates into someone else's beautiful handmade paper, I wondered how the paper was made. Again, I invested in education and materials and made some paper. As I became involved in more editorial work, I realized I wanted my suites to look a certain way. I began practicing styling and shooting my own work on my phone. I started spending way more time with amazing film photographers in the industry, and many of these people nurtured my interest in film photography. I loved film so much, I purchased a camera on my own and set out to fulfill my new creative craving.

I say all this to hopefully instill in anyone reading it, that creativity is a transferable skill. No one sees the world the way you do, through your lens. Please don't be afraid of what others will say of your work and focus on whether or not you love what you're doing. Try something new, and keep doing it if you love it. That's what life is about. I don’t know what’s next, but I know it’ll be whatever I want it to be.
